Fragmented self

In Fragmented Self, Sanne Maes investigates the tension between perception and inner experience through layered video portraits and ink-based imagery.

Maes’ work explores the gap between self-image and the fragmented self. The image of the “I” that we recognize is always a construction — never fully aligned with our inner experience. In her video works, faces and projections sometimes fit perfectly, yet often they slip just out of sync. It is precisely in that moment of displacement that the instability of identity becomes visible: there is always a rupture between the self as we see ourselves (the imaginary) and the self as it truly exists (the fragmented subject).

By playing with transparency, distortion, and layering, Sanne Maes creates a visual space in which identity becomes fluid — a space where recognition and estrangement meet, and where longing and loss remain inextricably intertwined.
