Lost identity

In Lost Identity, Sanne Maes explores the human tendency to grasp the inner self — an attempt to understand the workings of the mind. The series consists of video portraits in which a human figure slowly moves behind Rorschach-inspired inkblots. The Rorschach test, where people project their emotions and interpretations onto abstract shapes, becomes here a metaphor for the fragile interplay between perception and being.

The figures in the videos seem to merge with the inkblots, dissolve into them, or hide behind them. At times, multiple faces move through one another, evoking a haunting sense of inner struggle and transformation.

Lost Identity reveals the instability of self-image — the constant shifting between recognition and estrangement, between control and surrender. The work invites viewers to encounter their own projections within this liminal space where identity becomes fluid and uncertain.
